$ Makes Mazey Very Unlikely

MORGANTOWN — Head baseball coach Randy Mazey has signed a contract that will keep him at WVU through the 2018-’19 season.

The contract replaces Mazey’s original offer sheet, which he had been operating under since he became the Mountaineers’ head coach more than two years ago.

Mazey, 48, will earn close to $1.5 million in base pay during the contract, which retroactively covers WVU’s recently-completed 2013-’14 season. Under the terms of the new agreement, Mazey’s annual salary will jump from $150,000, where it stood for his first two years in Morgantown, to $245,000 next season. His base pay will increase $10,000 per year for the remainder of his contract, maxing out at $285,000 in 2019.

Mazey will also receive a $105,000 “retention incentive” on July 1 of this year and, beginning in 2015, will receive an additional $25,000 every Aug. 30, as long as he is still employed by the university.

The WVU baseball program has gone 61-52 under Mazey. The team finished 28-26 last season and is expected to open its new $21 million ballpark at University Town Centre next year.

In a previous report, WVU Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Keli Cunningham indicated that Mazey had not been paid for incentives already met, pending the finalization of his contract. Cunningham confirmed Monday, June 9, that Mazey would not be compensated retroactively and that the incentives would only apply after the new contract was signed, on June 5.
